Myopia Management

If you notice that distant objects are becoming difficult to see clearly, you may have developed myopia or nearsightedness. This situation can make everyday life more difficult, particularly when it is hard to see road signs or even the television across the room. Myopia is a common condition that affects many children and adults. Myopia can be diagnosed by an optometrist and corrected with eyeglasses. At Athens Family Vision Clinic in Athens, GA, our team is ready to provide you and your family with the quality eye care you need.

Myopia Management

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the cornea or lens is curved too much. This causes images to focus in front of the retina rather than on the retina itself. This creates blurry vision. Myopia is often hereditary. Many children will experience the early signs of myopia when they are young. This is why regular eye exams are so important. In adults, myopia can occur because of extensive close work, diabetes, or cataracts.

Eye Doctors Can Diagnose Myopia

Comprehensive eye exams are used to diagnose myopia. This includes a visual acuity test, better known as the eye chart test. This is followed by retinoscopy where light is shined in the eye to measure for refractive errors. The optometrist will also assess your ability to shift from focus from distant objects to near ones. If needed, the eye doctor will provide a prescription for eyeglasses or other eyewear such as contact lenses.

Preventing Myopia from Worsening

Several simple strategies can be used to limit the progression of myopia. These include things like limiting your time on digital devices, taking breaks from tasks that cause intense focus, and spending more time outside.

A simple rule to follow is known as the 20-20-20 rule. This means spending only 20 minutes on tasks that require close focus, then for 20 seconds, look at something that is 20 feet away. This helps the eyes to relax and refocus while reducing eye strain. Other strategies include keeping your computer screen about 18-24 inches away and adjusting the screen contrast.
