At Athens Family Vision Clinic, your optometrist in Athens, GA, wants you to know a few things about modern optometry treatments. Your eye exam might reveal that you’re developing, or have developed, astigmatism in one or both eyes. 1 in 4 adults develop astigmatism as an adult. Talk to an optometrist about contacts for astigmatism.

What is Astigmatism And How Does It Change My Eye?

Astigmatism changes the shape of the cornea or the lens, making light bend differently when entering the eye. According to the National Eye Institute, astigmatism can create blurry vision even if your vision is otherwise 20/20. It can cause you to need to squint and give you trouble at night. Doctors don’t know what causes astigmatism, and there’s no way to prevent it. Kids usually don't know they have it until their first eye exam.

How Can We Help?

We offer a full range of eyewear, including astigmatism lenses. One way to treat astigmatism is with a conically distorted lens that counters the distortion of the cornea. If you want prescription eyeglasses to treat your astigmatism, we have frames from all the major designers. Astigmatism lenses are indistinguishable from any other lens. Any frame shape and lens material can be made for astigmatism, so your options are endless!

What About Contacts?

Contact lenses are a popular option to treat astigmatism. Toric contact lenses are typically a few millimeters wider than other contacts and are completely invisible from any distance other than right next to the wearer’s face. If you’re wearing contacts, toric is almost impossible to tell from your regular contact lens, except for your enjoyment of your clearer vision!
