Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain may not lead to permanent vision issues, but it’s still uncomfortable to deal with. Our team at Athens Family Vision Clinic shares six tips to help deal with eye strain.

Take Breaks for Eye Care

Computer vision is caused by staring at digital screens for too long. Therefore, taking regular breaks to look at something else is essential. Aim to take a break every 20 minutes to stare at something in the distance for at least 20 seconds.

Control the Glare

Glare from lights and computer screens can play a role in digital eye strain. You can minimize this by using an anti-glare screen on your computer or having an anti-reflective coating added to your eyeglasses.

Adjust Your Settings

You can minimize your chances of computer vision by adjusting the settings on your computer. Start with the brightness. Your screen should not be brighter than the lighting in your workspace. Also, make the text bigger so that you don’t have to strain to see.

Be Mindful of Blinking

Blinking is essential for eye care as it helps to move the tears around and coat your eyes. Unfortunately, people tend to blink less when staring at a screen. Try to be mindful of this and blink more often.

Use Blue Light Glasses

Digital devices emit blue light that not only keeps you up at night but also contributes to digital eye strain. You can prevent these effects by wearing blue light glasses when using your devices. They’re available in both non-prescription and prescription eyeglasses.

Get Regular Eye Exams

An important part of vision care to combat any issues is to see your eye doctor regularly. An optometrist can help you with prescription glasses if you need them, as well as additional recommendations for improving your vision.
